Its a bug but I think I would like it kept in game as a feature. If you use a personal airdrop and drop it via a drone it converts it to a public airdrop. Would be a cool mini event that a player can do. I always end up with a lot of air drops near end of wipe I don't use. I have tested to confirm and the loot is the same as a regular drop. No way to exploit for personal gain.
I have also tested it with the attack heli and it just converts it to a smoke grenade when dropped. I would imagine APC would do the same but not tested.
