Its an undesirable effect when the plugin is updated whether that be to to fix another issue, add a new feature or it could happen after a restart if the plugin didn't properly save before the server went down. The first scenario is the more likely of the two in most cases.

As you mentioned unfortunately the only way to fix it is disconnect and reconnect pipes or in some cases you may need to pick up and replace the adaptors.
