We wanted to have the server more natural. Now we're getting a modded server instead? That makes no sense and is quite disappointing.

Pure+ isnt the "answer" to the decay question for pure, nor is it a replacement.  It's an outlet for pure players that would appreciate some qol perks we're unable to have on pure due to community restrictions, without the obtrusive ui and additional "bloat" pure players may not want such as the level system, net worth, tp's, and black market.  It also allows the admin teams for pure to run events for the pure community that, again, we were otherwise unable to hold due to community restrictions.

As stated by death earlier in the thread, the topic of pure decay will be reassessed once population levels stabilise and results of the poll are reviewed.

Pure isnt going anywhere, the admin teams players are used to arent going anywhere, and i cant speak for other teams, but ours is all set up with a plan in place to ensure the same quality of service is maintained among both servers 🙂

Looking at the last wipes, that wasn't the case, at least for Pure EU. Just because something "used to" be this or that doesn't mean it will going forward - Facebook used to be the biggest social media platform, Snapchat used to be big too. Changes not welcomed by a big margin of users decreased popularity and rightfully so.

And a lot of support FOR decay doesn't change the fact that a large portion of players was against it too (around 80 votes iirc)

@Death  At first it sounded like your vision for Pure was always to "purify" it at some point, that decay therefore was something long coming, not a rushed desicion. Then when the polls were opened it was never stated by you or anyone else HOW decay would be implemented, would it be modified ? 50% ? normal decay? A lot of people that spoke out FOR decay specifically said that while they wouldn't mind decay, they wouldn't IF the decay rate would be decreased.

Now after we know that there's a split to Pure+ and Pure it seems like your vision wasn't to make the server go back to its vanilla roots at all - as Pure+ has features like portable recyclers, airdrops, removal tools and so on. How is that in line with your wish for how Pure would be developing since 2017 that you explained when you opened the voting on decay?

It seems like monetization was the reason in the end, as we can see with the Pure+ Servers store perks and store items. Which in itself is more than reasonable since the servers don't run on good vibes and love - but the way it's been communicated  is different and leaves a bitter taste.

Now - in my opinion at least - a portion of the playerbase (wether it'll be half or more) will shift to Pure+, mostly those who don't mind spending money, or have spent money on RustEZ before (members and VIPs) on amenities or QoL stuff or start of wipe perks like airdrops, leaving more or most of casual players (which still make out a huge part of the community) on Pure, partly for the decay and partly for its vanilla origins since you can't "buy" your way to accelerate your start of wipe (wether it be at the actual force wipe or whenever these players decide to join).
Give that some time, a couple months or so, and when the Pure server will lose it's popularity people will look over to Pure+ solely for the bigger playerbase by then - or maybe because some people and groups who used to play together, friends who've been made along the way and so on, will have been split up since some prefer Pure+ and some the normal Pure playstyle - and at that point I don't think it would be worth it to keep running the normal Pure servers for you (which I and many others wouldn't want to happen ofc).

And @SpeedJourney I think your point about the servers listing makes sense, community servers gain more attention compared to modded ones when it comes to PvE. Originally after Facepunch made changes last year and most of the Pure item stores were unobtainable on the Pure servers due to that, Death said that they removed those very items not to lose their possibility to list Pure under the community tag, now that doesn't matter anymore I guess.

That's just my 2 cents, but this all seems very rushed and the reasoning doesn't seem to be anymore connected to server performance or anything tied to decay, especially since your own staff members are now hinting on normal Pure getting decay too at some point.

Disclaimer: my intent is not to criticize the desicions for no reason, I try to put myself in the shoes of you, Death, as well as the players and I wouldn't take time to give feedback if this server wouldn't mean this much to me.

I cant speak to deaths portion of your question line, however i feel i can confidently say that standard community pure wont be going anywhere.  It's been the heart and soul of EZ since its inception, and certainly for the entirety of my 6 years here as a player/admin.

What pure+ affords us is the opportunity for pure players to enjoy qol perks, their VIP perks, and website purchases if they choose, without having to deal with obtrusive UI's, net worth, teleports, and other commands, found on the more heavily modded servers, keeping the overall gameplay largely "pure".

Pure+ also allows our admin teams to run server events for our pure members, complete with prizes they're actually able to make use of without needing to switch to a fully modded server for a month to redeem/get use of.

At any rate, pure+ was NOT created as a replacement, and standard pure will remain an anchor for the community 🙂

For me this server don't have sence ! No one will play Pure server under modded tag , all vanilla enjoyers search servers only at community tag and with this server the hole idea of full pure server with decay is pretty much dead !

This exact rendition of pure used to host 300+ players with 100 more in queue (on us).  Additionally it allows the admin team to run events for our pure players without skirting the community restrictions, as well as allowing plauers to make website purchases if they choose and support the server.

Decay on standard pure will have its day, and i've been an advocate for that for a long time, and theres always a lot of support for it, pure+ wont kill that unless the players let it 🙂

The ban will be lifted once 72 hours have passed, but it will remain on your record.  There will be no additional chances as this post should encourage you to change how you speak in our servers and to abide by the rules.

Take a few minutes before rejoining, and refresh yourself on the rules to avoid any chance of breaking them. If you are unclear on any of them, or aren't sure what is permitted, reach out to the staff and we'll be happy to clarify them for you.

No raiding, griefing or looting of any kind.

No mic or chat spam, player disrespect, politics, racism or harassment.

No camping loot rooms, monuments or any highly concentrated areas.

You may build in caves but you must ensure safe passage for other players.

No blocking water ways, building around monuments or large areas of unused land.

(Please read the splash page as well, as each server type has slight variations regarding specific features of those servers.)

    Welcome back.
(Please bear in mind, this is a one-time ban reversal. No further rule infractions of this nature can happen. Thank you!)

    Server: US Pure
    Time: 12:29AM EST
    Length: Permanent
    Reason: Griefing
    More Info (Optional):

A player called me over for a player who had entered their base by following them in through a door they had opened.  After going to the reporting player to investigate, i found alex's body within the base after they were dispatched by the shotgun trap located inside the players base they had entered.  It was also reported at this time that alex had stolen items from the base owners mannequin, as well as stealing and crashing that players mini and stealing and damaging the players motorcycle.  While speaking with the base owner about what was all accessed and/or taken, alex returned to the base at which point the base owner opened their door so alex could retrieve their items.  Instead of retrieving their items alex sat in the pilot seat of the base owners replacement mini and refused to leave at which point i kicked alex with the message "read the rules and rejoin" to allow the owner time to move their mini.  Additionally a warning was sent notifying alex that raiding, stealing, and player griefing are against the rules of our server, and that they can use /rules in chat to bring up the server rules.

After returning, alex entered the players base to retrieve the items off their body from earlier.  After retrieving their items, alex continued to roam around the players base refusing to leave after being asked multiple times, at which point i removed alex from the players base allowing them time to close their doors.  alex returned to the base and began spamming the code lock to annoy the base owner at which point i sent a second warning for player harassment.

Shortly after their second warning, alex gained access to the base a third time while the player was attempting to leave their base, stole items from another mannequin, and stole the players motorcycle again, beginning to damage it.  Given the amount of infractions in such a short timeframe, and refusing to heed any warnings at all, a permanent ban was issued on their account to prevent further disruption to the community.

I have a feeling that many of the people who voted "Yes" don't even play Pure

To the contrary, "no" is currently a significantly higher ratio of non-pure players

Not that that holds much relevance, as players regularly switch servers and/or play multiple throughout a wipe, and most players make or have made their way through a pure server at some point, we appreciate everyones feedback 🙂

On RustEZ EU Pure there are widely known rules which are unwritten but being enforced, for example you are not allowed to place more than 4 windmills, you are only allowed 2 cars per team/player (not sure, because as I said those rules are nowhere written down) and so on.
If an admin notices or is being told about more than 4 windmills on EU Pure, the player in question has 24 hours time to decide which windmills they don't want to keep, any windmills that are exceeding the limit of 4 will be removed by then. Same applies to any more then 2 cars (except if they are not for personal use + you have an automated car shop to sell them to other players).

From what I have seen there seem to be different rules for EU Pure and e.g. US Pure that are being enforced, which can be confusing if you can't find those rules anywhere other than by asking an admin or another player, but that's a different topic, which should maybe also be taken into account

the rulebook we have to follow as admins should be consistent no matter the server you play on as it's the same rulebook for all 13 servers.  the only rules that should be enforced with warnings are located on the rules list.  (in reference to lag/performance issues, there will obviously be a lot of admin discretion being used for those cases, however hard "limits" dont exist)

I've come to understand that a big part that plays a role in why server performance decreases isn't just the size of bases but also the amount of entities it contains.

Think about the tons and tons of lighting, (hundreds of meters in string lights, hundreds of industrial lights, tons of decorational items and so on) industrial components etc.

A big base containing a couple dozen boxes and a few lets say sofas, shelves and lockers won't nearly have as much of an impact as a small 4x4x4 containing lights on every wall, dozens of garlands on every door frame, red and blue siren lights being spammed on the roof for no reason at all, and a bunch of wind turbines (because, unless someone brings it to the server admins attention that someone has more turbines than allowed nobodys checking that from my personal experience) tons of automated objects and literally 50+ vending machines full to the brim on the outside.

Another thing is building materials - with enabled upkeep huge twig bases that barely need upkeep will still be a thing - negatively affecting performance much more than a similar wood/stone/sheet metal upgraded one. And the easy solution to that is to reduce decay time for inactivity - theres dozens of people joining the server at the start, laying down a giant foundation for very ambitious sized bases and then never coming back on - and with 10 days of inactivity protection from decay thats a 3rd of the whole wipe where nobody can do anything about that or the hit this maps area takes in terms of performance.

The whole reason why it was changed to 10 instead of the prior 7 days was to give everyone, wether its a student or someone who works full time or has other obligations and for that reason doesn't have unlimited time to play but still wants to have a fun and enjoyable experience, the option to play and build for a bit, then come back a couple days later and continue where they left things without having to worry that it will be gone (and enabling upkeep doubles down on that only that now their base will be gone after a day or two unless they spend their limited time to farm up ressources, which I underestand is easy to do on PvE servers but it still takes time that would be otherwise spent on actually playing and chatting with others and enjoying the game instead of making it feel like a chore).

Enabling upkeep destroys the sole purpose behind that change and the whole reason why many players value this server so much over others and comes back every wipe. When looking at peoples reasoning for why they left PVP servers to join RustEZ or left other PvE servers it's the fact that:

    - PVP servers feel like "competing with ""unemployed people"" or those still in school who have unlimited time to play - can't farm upkeep? your time invested will be wiped out either by being offlined or the base decaying itself
    - PVP servers feel like a chore, build anything decently sized, have fun spending an hour or more farming up to maintain it - can't be online for a day or two? same result - your time invested will be wiped clean and your base will decay
    - most PvE servers have upkeep enabled, which makes RustEZ so special -  it's a vanilla gather rate serverwithout upkeep, no 2x, 3x or 10x one where the increased gather rate compensates for the fact that you have to farm up a lot of ressources to maintain your base ---> having upkeep on a vanilla gather rate server just brings the downsides without balancing it out
    - the size of the community ! it's one of the bigger (non-modded) PvE servers in terms of playerbase and I don't see the change do anything more than drive away potential new players, casual or "weekend" players or keep existing ones from coming back after having their base decayed

A few underlying topics that deserve more attention when asking about wether or not upkeep should be implented are:

1.) which types of players have the most impact on the server performance

---> it's not the average Joe's hopping on for a weekend it's the people who've played for a long time on the server and keep coming back to build gigantic pyramides, huge farm bases, walling off big chunks of the map, putting in 16 hour days for the majority of the first week(s) until they have a crazy amount of vending machines, giant farm bases to sell hundreds of teas and thousands of items in the shortest possible time after the server wiped, or those being in the biggest groups therefore filling a small part of  the map with the most entities since they live together in a certain area which makes the entity density in those areas the reason for performance hits (in those areas but also for the average performance of the server itself)

TC rings are still allowed, which provides players the opportunity to build at a rate they can both maintain with their individual playtime, and expand as needed throughout the course of the month.

2.) moderation of server rules regarding performance

---> from personal experience I can say that while we do have 2 new amazing admins (and many existing ones) on EU Pure, the nature of volunteering as an admin comes with it's own challenges namely not having the time of overseeing everything thats going on or going wrong in a timely manner. these people have their own lifes, obligations and can't be there every day ofc

BUT unfortunately it seems that current or recent (talking about recent few wipes) admin activity is not really covering the needs of moderation on this server size/pop and therefore active enforcement of rules like max. of 4 wind turbines for example - there's been cases of people putting up 12 or more, and sometimes people speak up and admins take a look, sometimes it gets lost along the process and nothing happens for one or another reason, but the fact is that it takes maybe 5 minutes for an admin to get a rough overview by flying over the map to see blatant or obvious cases of people disregarding that rule - from personal experience I can say theres multiple cases like that every single wipe I've played, and it isn't always being solved, sometimes it just stays that way until the server wipes

---> same with unresonable/ excessive usage of lighting, for example people putting up 100 siren lights on top of their roofs which tanks FPS in that area significantly - it takes a quick fly around the map to find extreme cases of such and a quick note ingame to address the player in question

---> unfortunately it feels like these rules are being enforced in a reactive rather than proactive way, unless someone stumbles across such buildings/areas and speaks up in discord (since realistically except for the first 1-3 days of wipe there are rarely admins online and if so rarely for very long unless those admins have projects of their own they tend to e.g. building for events or preparing for such) not much is gonna happen on its own, and even if someone addresses said matters in discord its oftentimes overlooked, which I don't blame on the admins, I understand stuff gets lost with the many many enquiries being admitted to the general or help channel in discord on a daily bases for matters concerning all kinds of RustEZ servers and regions

there are no building restrictions on windmills or electrical components.  lag happens individially on a case by case basis, and is addressed upon reports to the admin team.  we are not allowed to make modifications to these bases outright, and generally will ask a player to make those modifications voluntarily prior to the team taking action only if the case is serious enough to warrant doing so.  this process can take days or more depending on the situation and playtime of the owner of the offending base.

3.) what rules or measures can be put in to place for giant twig bases degrading server performance early in to the wipe ?

---> everyone who played sometime around wipe and the following days knows the situation where huge ambitious projects are being started with giant twig foundations and shells being built for these people to never come back online, while the decay time that was changed last year from 7 to now 10 days locks these buildings in to place for a 3rd  of the whole wipe - this time frame is way too long and enabling upkeep will barely counter that considering you can farm up a tc full of wood in 10 minutes and secure  your upkeep for your giant twig frame of a base for the remainder of the wipe

---> maybe going back to 7 days or implementing a measure concerning a different, shorter time frame for twig decay is an option? and keeping the time for decay for  anything  upgraded to wood or even stone and above the same? a big base out of twig can be maintained for 30 days with a single TC full of wood, a same sized base out of stone with a stone filled TC only for a day or two (exemplary for the sake of the argument, ofc it depends on the actual size and amount of building blocks and so on)

Rules governing the size, material, or outfitting of a base are highly unlikely (however you can always add suggestions in the suggestions forum of this website) in addition to differing purge rates based on material.  Decay would serve as the "alternate" option here to more quickly remove many of those 5 minute bases where the player logs on and never returns.  situations where those short time players fill the TC to maintain it for the duration of wipe would likely be few and far between, and purge would still remove inactives at that point.

To summarize, enabling upkeep, in my opinion, mostly affects "casual" or average players which make the majority of the servers population, not the few putting in hundreds of hours every month who will barely be affected by the upkeep(rushing progression the first couple of days by putting in exorbitant hours after wipe), therefore driving away new players, putting off existing or new players from coming back or the latter ones with limited time to spend on the game which would negatively impact the servers population and maybe even hinder growth or just maintaining the existing player base while not addressing issues or matters that are equally contributing to performance degradation that can be explored before ultimately changing such a fundamental aspect of the Pure servers.

DISCLAIMER for people who want to bring individual hardware or free time on hand in to the discussion of this topic:

This is coming from someone who has a high-end system (RYZEN 9800 X3D, 32 GB RAM, RTX 4090) and more than enough time on hand to sink in to the game. HOWEVER up until the end of last year I was playing on a low-end system myself and was experiencing the same performance issues being brought up by other players in this discussion so I understand their point-of-view equally as well.

Therefore all arguments and points made by me are not made out of self-interest, since my situation fortunately allows me to not be affected (neither server performance wise or from the point of having to spend time farming for upkeep) nearly as much by enabling upkeep as the average RustEZ Pure player.

    Cheers!

  9. also keep in mind, a stack of diesel at GE can provide you with enough stone or frags to maintain a moderate sized base most if not all wipe using industrial conveyors into the TC (assuming a reduced decay rate)

but this also provides players the opportunity to have something to do later into wipe, opportunities to set up vendys and trade for resources if smashing rocks isnt your thing, and will open up a lot more space that can sometimes be taken up by random foundations or players who joined for 5 minutes (without having to wait 10 days for purge).

it's not nearly the burden some players will inevitably make it out to be.

upon rejoining the server, superfly proceeded to the next closest base, parkoured onto the roof and dropped into the players farm/chicken area.  after rummaging around, they then began to twig onto that base at which time another warning was sent for griefing, and they were asked a second time to be sure to use /rules in chat to review our server rules.

after departing the second base, superfly found another base and began scoping it out before eventually twigging onto the base, gaining access, and stealing items from the sleeper within.

  17. Offender: SHIZZZARD      Battlemetrics | Steam
    Server: US Pure
    Time: 2:07PM EST
    Length: Permanent
    Reason: Griefing
    More Info (Optional):

SHIZZZARD was initially warned in February after they were caught griefing their neighbor with high external walls as retaliation for building nearby.  A console warning was sent notifying SHIZZARD that player and base griefing is against the server rules and requested that they type /rules in chat to become familiar with the server rules.  This warning was also sent in Russian and English.

SHIZZZARD's second strike came in June when they had stolen another players mini and attempted to flee the scene when the mini owner jumped into the passenger seat.  SHIZZARD was spoken to verbally about player owned vehicles, and that helicopters, horses and boats can only be bought and don't spawn randomly.

Today after logging on and reviewing admin requests, it came to my attention that a player mentioned having ladders placed on their base.  after going to the players base and investigating, it was found that the ladders were placed by SHIZZARD.

A permanent ban was placed on SHIZZARDS account, given the amount of rule violations in the past year, and their continued gameplay as an opportunistic rulebreaker.

  18. Offender: Raindancer       Battlemetrics | Steam
    Server: US Pure
    Time: 5:27 PM EST
    Length: Permanent
    Reason: Stealing and griefing
    More Info (Optional):

A player called for an admin to come over after another player entered their base while they were building it, removed them from their own TC, and locked them in with build pieces.  Raindancer was removed from the players base, and sent a warning asking them to review /rules to avoid any further rule infractions on our server..

shortly after this, while observing raindancer, i followed them to another players base where i witnessed them push a players vehicle into a lake.  Raindancer was kicked with the message "read the rules and rejoin" as well as warned outlining our rules against player griefing.

After returning from their kick, raindancer f1 killed, and respawned on the beach in order to quickly return to the previous base, and began attempting to search for a way in.  Raindancer eventually snuck into the base when one of the base owners was returning home, and began to loot a sleeper within the base.  Given their disregard for the server rules in such a short period of time, a permanent  ban was placed on Raindancers account to prevent further disruption to the community from their actions.

With the current cancel culture in the world, racism in  all aspects of society is being closely scrutinized.  While we do understand that it still heavily permeates music, comedy, movies, and other media, it is something we do not feel is appropriate to have in our servers.

  20. Offender: UncDih   Battlemetrics | Steam
    Server: US Pure
    Time: 5:47AM EST
    Length: Permanent
    Reason: Griefing
    More Info (Optional):

I logged onto the server to investigate another incident a player needed assistance with, while loading in UncDih was being extremely toxic towards the player who had called out a theft in chat, and would not leave them alone, so a warning was sent notifying them that toxicity, player disrespect, and harassment in chat towards another player is against the server rules, and that they should type /rules in chat to bring up the server rules and avoid further incidents.

a short time after their initial warning, they began being toxic in chat again, at which point i teleported to UncDih and began to observe them.  Shortly after arriving at their location i found them twigging onto another players base without their permission.  UncDih was kicked with the message "read the rules and rejoin" as well as sent a second warning letting them know griefing, including twigging onto another players base is against the server rules.

After returning from their kick, UncDih began searching for entry into any nearby bases, and eventually began twigging onto another base, at which point a permanent ban was placed on their account.

  21. To be clear this ban had nothing to do with the explanation you provided, and everything to do with actual racist terminology.  If you're still unsure what you said immediately before triggering the language filter, youre welcome to DM me for a screenshot of the pertinent logs 🙂
