Normally god genetic plants can be crossbred easily without hundreds of plant seeds.
If you have difficulty in crossbreeding there are a few calculators that can help you:

To easily increase berry/corn/pumpkin/potato seeds, plant seeds in the corners of planters. Leave bad genetic ones to fruit, then harvest and eat.

Being able to salvage hammer a plant to get a blank clone cheats the game and quickens progression which leads to boredom.
If all else is too much, support your ingame farmer who has done the work and buy their clones.
